About the EP
After releasing a trio of singles earlier this year previewing their 2018 full-length EP, Joey Sweeney & The Neon Grease went straight back into the studio to record a surprise holiday EP that’s shooting straight for New Christmas Classic status. On the Smilin’ Thru EP, the true-blue Philly band offer three ways to celebrate:

· SMILIN’ THROUGH, a nearly 100-year-old Tin Pan Alley classic made famous by Bing Crosby and Judy Garland, rendered here with sleigh bells, of course, as well as smoldering saxophone, grand piano, and guest harp by Jesse Sparhawk

· DON’T KILL YOURSELF THIS CHRISTMAS, a Sweeney original that confronts Seasonal Affect Disorder head-on whilst encountering Jimmy Stewart, The Waitresses and of course, The Boss

·AULD LANG SYNE, the traditional New Year’s classic, done up here as a raucous homage to the Pogues, the Mekons and other bands who drink

About Joey Sweeney & The Neon Grease
Drawing inspiration from sources as disparate as 1970s Philly nightlife folklore and Denis Johnson’s The Incognito Lounge, Joey Sweeney & The Neon Grease present as a living micro-history of redemption amidst sleaze. In here, chiming 80s 12-string guitars, classic rock sax solos, and rainy bedroom Velvet Underground listening sessions all blend together. In these songs are little stories of triumph over dirty circumstance and grace under pressure, with the friendship of an urban family “street band” woven throughout. They’re little tales of hard-won glory — like Sweeney sings in “Baptized in Vibe,” “Everybody except me knew I would survive.”
